Hurricane Dorian
Wauchula, FL - Events of Tuesday, September 3 to Wednesday, September 4, 2019
We're happy to report Hurricane Dorian was pretty much a non-event as far as the area where we are located in west-central Florida is concerned. After a week of following projected paths that changed several times a day (some of those early paths could have potentially been catastrophic for us), we escaped unscathed.
What was previously a Category 5 storm had weakened to Category 2 by the time it passed by us, and it helped immensely that the eye was 80 to 100 miles offshore. The storm brought 10 to 15 mph wind with gusts to 20 and surprisingly little rain to our area on Tuesday. Wednesday was about the same with maybe a few more clouds coming around the backside of the storm. The wind is supposed to start to gradually decrease today (Thursday), and the forecast is for 94ยบ and wall-to-wall sunshine.
There is some damage from wind and storm surge in coastal areas of Florida, but it was relatively minor compared to the Bahamas where Hurricane Dorian took two days to meander a relatively short distance across the northern islands of the Bahamas as a Category 5 storm. The storm has strengthened again to Category 3 as it heads for the Carolinas. Our prayers go out to the storm victims, especially in the Bahamas, and we also pray for safety for those farther north.
So there you have it. We experienced our first hurricane as Floridians. As we said, it was a non-event, and we're very thankful for that.
'Til next time...
We are thankful as well for you guys, and for the coast of Florida. . .
